Petey’s Pointers for Halloween!

Petey wants to let all pet owners know that Halloween can be a spooky time for your fur baby! The holiday is filled with strange sights, noises and hazards for dogs and cats.

Halloween sights like costumes can be scary when seen by your pet or worn by your pet. If you plan on your pet wearing a costume for Halloween, have a dress rehearsal before Halloween so they can smell it and get use to wearing it. Make sure parts of the costume are not ingested or cause the pet to get tangled up resulting in a choking hazard.

Noises associated with Halloween can cause anxiety and be stressful to pets. The doorbell being rung repetitively, strange music and screams or the loud shouting of “Boo” can be very disturbing to animals. When stressed, an open door can be an escape route for a frightened pet.

Candy can cause severe illness with upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting. Chocolate and candy containing xylitol can be highly toxin and may cause death if ingested.

For us “scaredy cats” or “cowardly canines”, please consider doing the following:

1. Keep us in a crate or locked in a back bedroom with our blanket, toys, and treats where it is quiet.

2. Keep candy out of our reach.

3. Sit on the porch to pass out candy or visit a community scheduled “trunk

4. Unless we are a show off, please don’t make us wear a costume. Some of us don’t like costume PAW – ties.
